To teach about "MIGRATION" a lower secondary group ( age 12-13)
I have decided to have a transdisciplinary approach lesson, my students had the opportunity to use language in real life settings, engaged in collaborative work and improved not only their linguistic accuracy and coherence, but also helped them to think critically and creatively. In addition to mentioned benefits, it also enabled students to become acquainted with their culture and other European cultures. Context: Within the Erasmus+ programme, we have a project entitled MIGRATION, in November 2016, we had a trasnantional meeting in Romania when teachers from: Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Turkey and Croatia obsserved our English classes. To take advanatge of the international teachers' presence and to make students aware of the migration phenomenon , one of the activities during the lesson was the "migration" of students to the international teachers ( who were sitting in the back of the classroom) and interview them about their countries in order to find out: where the country is situated, three major cities and what are they important for and where are they situated. See below the lesson plan and the materials....... |
As teachers we always have dillemas concerning teaching, that is the reason why I have decided to write this blog and share with you my teaching experiences. I do hope the activities will inspire you and I would like you to inspire me, as well.
Teaching in an Art School is a real challenge for me, as an English teacher, to find methods aiming to challenge both: my students’ artistic talent and sensitivity to express and improve their English skills. |
Of course, it was of paramount importance the presence of the international teachers to help students develop their linguistic skills through asking questions and ilustrating their findings, but it can be, also, done with students. Teacher either gives students a country to search info about or let them choose one. Divided in two teams and each team in groups of three or four: one team interviews and the oher team answers. For example, if there are 30 students in the classroom each team will have 15 members who will be grouped in 5 groups of three memebers. Each group of three will be in charge with one country to ask about and one country to search about, so as at the end of the activity there will be 10 countries ( represented in 10 trees)because the team that interviews first will also be interviewed as they will switch roles.
